Time Off: Freedom from Work

I'd been shooting this series for a number of years without even realizing it. Finally, in 2012, as I was editing a day's shots, it struck me that the one conceptual thread running through all these photos was that the people in the photos were not at work. This was not to say that they weren't necessarily working, but they weren't at their places of employment. They were enjoying their freedom. Or were they? What about this whole job thing? Is it fair, equitable? Is it our right to work or our right not to work? Has someone convinced us that working for someone else at minimum wage is a good thing? Good for whom? And so, Freedom from Work, in which the word "from" is key. It doesn't necessarily refer to being away; it could very well mean "caused by" or "made by." So, freedom made by work? That sounds oddly familiar.

But all that is outside the scope of these photographs. I just made pictures of people away from their daily jobs. See a sample of the series here.
